of bob mcdonnell's campaign for the governorship in virginia, and the way he has governed since he has been there. virginia governor bob mcdonnell, after tim pawlenty, now being christened the new voice of the when "the richmond times-dispatch" endorsed him last year they noted his, quote, moderate temperment. mr. mcdonnell was hand-picked by the republican party to give the republican response to president obama's state of the union address earlier this year, after he had been in office precisely 11 days. mr. mcdonnell was praised as the moderate seeming new face of the republican party. move over, tim pawlenty, there is a new republican moderate seeming guy in town. a new republican moderate seeming guy that declared the month of april will be confederate history month in the commonwealth of virginia. governor mcdonnell releasing a proclamation to that effect saying, quote, april is the month in which the people of virginia joined the confederate states of america in a four-year war between the states for independence. oh, that's what we're calling it now, a four-year war between

now to beckley, west virginia. you see the president of the united states there. he's at this memorial service. also west virginia governor joe manchin there. a number of other dignitaries. what's happening right now there in beckley is family members of the 29 victims of this month's coal mine explosion are filing in. you see the white crosses there just in the backdrop. what we understand will happen is a number of the family members, one representative of each of the 29 families, will actually have a helmet and place the helmet on each of the 29 crosses that represent the 29 men who were killed in that underground explosion. we also understand maybe roughly about 15 minutes after the hour, president obama will deliver the eulogy. we understand it might be about ten minutes long. of course, he'll talk about the collective grief that people are feeling as a result of this explosion and the lives lost, and he will also try to offer some assurances that some measures of safety will be put into place for future coal miners and other communities that have such great investments i

disaster in west virginia. the clock is ticking in an upper blanch mine tonight. four miners still unaccounted for after monday's explosion. authorities say they know where all four were at the time of the blast. rescuers still can't get inside the mine. the levels of poisonous gas is still too high. >> the drill teams are furiously drilling holes in this mountain to vents out some of those dangerous gases but they're confronted with the problem of more than one dangerous gas that is keeping the rescue teams at bay. >> to vent 9 mine of its dangerous gases, crews started drilling three holes last night. the first drill broke through nearly hen 00 feet of rock this morning. rescuers banged on the drill but got no response from below. officials are focused on three of the five drill sites. all 1100 feet down where the lethal gas is being vented. two sites are near a refuge center stocked with food and water to last four days where they hope to find three miners. they believe the fourth miner is no more than 1,000 feet away. >> reporter: abc news has confirmed two more citations at th

now at the site of the upper big branch mine. it's in mont coal, west virginia. bob barnard live in the newsroom with the very latest. >> reporter: the death toll is now seven. seven coal miners killed in raleigh county, west virginia. that's about 30 miles south of charleston. it's the scene of a massive rescue effort tonight with 19 coal miners unaccounted for trapped in a mountaintop mine owned by the largest coal mining company in that part of the country. safety officials say the seven miners killed died in an explosion around 3:00 this afternoon while leaving the site in a vehicle. two other men with them were hurt. officials say they don't know yet what caused the blast. >> we really just came to pray because we don't have immediate family in the mines but we know so many people that work here. our pastor works at this mine actually from our church. he wasn't in the mine but he's here. we're just praying and all we can do right now as a community is come together and pray because if you're from here, we're all coal mining family. my dad was a miner. my grandpa a miner and my
